KL Wong
Mr Wong is a founder and the Chairman of Hong Kong Grand Opera Company Limited (HKGO). His primary roles are to set business strategy and standard of corporate governance, implement fundraising and assume responsibility for an oversight of the overall management of HKGO.
In terms of his experience in the opera arena, he was a director of Opera Hong Kong from 2009 to 2018, and the Chairman from January 2018 to March 2019. During his tenure in Opera Hong Kong, he worked with Mr DJ Dong to get a major sponsorship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club to establish the first Jockey Club Opera Hong Kong Young Artist Development Programme 2016-19, being the first ever programme to train and nurture local young vocal talents.
Professionally, Mr KL Wong is an eminent international investment banker. He has over 30 years of investment banking experience in Asia and New York. Before his retirement in 2009, he worked in Merrill Lynch (Asia Pacific) Limited for more than 16 years. He was, in reverse chronological order, Merrill Lynch’s Chairman of Asia Investment Banking, Head of Asia Investment Banking and Head of Hong Kong Investment Banking. Before joining Merrill Lynch, he worked at three other global financial services companies.
Mr Wong, pursuant to an appointment by the Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong SAR Government, served for two terms as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) from 2007 to 2011. He was a member of SFC’s Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) Committee and the China Committee of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.
Mr Wong graduated with a BA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1972 and a PhD from the University of Leicester, UK in 1977. He was awarded an Honorable Fellowship by The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2014.
Mr Wong is now an independent non-executive director of five companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, a trustee and vice chairman of New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a director of CUHK Medical Centre Limited.
